Other findings - Day 1 again!

Wow, I've realized how much my body needs to eat right.  It effects me not only physically but mentally too.  I'm much grumpier when I'm not eating right!  Blech!!!!  So, for my own self, (hehehehe) I'm going to use this space to document what I'm eating...just to keep myself honest!

Back In it!

One HUGE thing I've noticed in my time off the Paleo wagon is that when I'm not eating paleo, my joints hurt ALL. THE. TIME.  As my 6 year old would say..."not cool, dude".  Miserably painful.  Takes me back to the chemo days and the horrible body aches associated with it.  I hereby vow to keep processed/refined sugar and flour and other crap food OUT of my daily eating regime.  Once in a great while, maybe....very, very, maybe.  I can't deal with the pain!!!

Back on Track

The past few weeks have been an eating disaster.  And I can feel it too!  Between crazy schedules and my better half not feeling well, we've fallen off the wagon.  Time to pull ourselves up by the boot-straps and get back on track.  There is a VERY noticeable difference in how we feel when we're eating good, clean food!!!

Two months

It's been almost two months now.  I'm down 20 pounds and I definitely feel better.  Need to work on scaling back on the "cheat" days but I really enjoy eating good, clean food.  We recently purchased a whole grass fed hog from a local farmer and in the fall we'll purchase a 1/4-1/2 of beef as well.  It's some of the best meat I've ever eaten and I know exactly where it comes from!!!  Through all this, I've actually started cooking more often which is really saying something!  We've found some staples that we really enjoy and we try new things almost every week.  One BIG thing in going paleo is planning.  One the weeks that we've really planned things out it's been much easier to stay the course.

Week 4

Wow!  I can't believe it's been almost a month since we started eating paleo!  We've "fallen off the wagon" a few times but for the most part we've stayed on track.  The hardest part for me is after dinner.  That's when my craving for sweets has always kicked in!  Now, we have found some yummy snacks but once we ran out (and haven't had time to replenish the supply) I have been in trouble.  We found a recipe for a dark chocolate bacon/hazelnut bark, if you will.  It's pretty simple, dark chocolate chips and bacon fat, with bacon and hazelnuts on the top.  I'm going to have to make more this weekend.  Next week I'm hoping to start yoga with some new DVD's I just bought.  I definitely need to add to my two 20 minute walks everyday.  I think yoga can only be good for me since I'm utterly lacking in flexibility!!!!  Onward and upward!!

Week 2

Well, we fell slightly off the wagon on Friday night.  I had a hankering for deep dish pizza that couldn't be satisfied without having some!  So, we had half on Friday night and half on Saturday for lunch.  Really, not too bad in my opinion.  It was sausage, cheese (which isn't, I know, strictly paleo) and the crust...which is definitely NOT paleo.  But sooooo yummy!!!

I got on the scale this morning, knowing full well I'd lost weight and sure enough, I'm down 10 pounds!  Not bad for a week!  Played hockey Friday night so I got in my hard workout for the week.  Everyday I walk 20 minutes each way to and from the train station and work.  That's my daily exercise.  Gonna try to add in pull-ups, push-ups, planks, and squats this week.

I'm trying to "muscle" my way through being so tired.  I know it's a direct result of eating right so I know eventually I'll feel less tired...and hopefully have much MORE energy!

We made Kale chips last night.  I was truly hoping they'd live up to all the hype.  I gotta say, they're addictively yummy!!!  Trying to vary things up a bit this week since I think we both burned ourselves out on salad and chicken last week.

Day 5

I have been so tired for the last couple of days.  Tired enough to feel like I'm ready for bed at 6pm!  I'm sure it's how my body is rebelling against the absence of processed foods.  I certainly hope it is!  Other than feeling exhausted, I'm feeling pretty good.  I don't necessarily have the "right before bed" sweets cravings that I used to.  I'm sure my body will eventually thank me for that.

I couldn't fathom the thought of another salad for lunch today.  I mean, they're good and everything, I like the dressing we make, and with some meat on it they're very filling but I just can't do it today!  Luckily, we had enough leftovers last night that I can eat the pot roast over some cauliflower rice.  It sounds weird but it's yummy!  Then maybe I can ease my way back to salad....e-a-s-e.

Hockey tonight so I'm sure I'll crash when I get home from that!  This will be our first weekend of paleo so we'll see how it goes!!!

Day 4

Today's the 4th day and we're still going strong.  No sugar, flour for FOUR days!!!  That's a record for me.  I'm feeling good, although a little tired.  the tiredness could be from the change in my schedule since D started her new job.  Overall though, feeling pretty good.  We do need to figure out some yummy snacks though.  Guess that's what weekends are for.  Playing hockey Friday night but then we'll have to figure out when to get in our planks, push-ups, pull-ups and squats!!!

Day 2

So far, so good!  Even despite completely forgetting to fire up the slow cooker yesterday, we were able to stick to the plan....we just ate dinner at about 8pm.  Funny thing is, up until about 7:45pm I really didn't feel all that hungry.  Now, I'm not saying that I want to have a salad every single day but it certainly does fill me up!  Granted, it's not just lettuce.  It's lettuce, some veggies, and some type of protein with a delicious balsamic vingear and olive oil (with spicy brown mustard) salad dressing.  Tonight, since it didn't cook all the way before last nights dinner, we'll be trying spaghetti squash!!!!  Should be interesting.  For my own exercise regimen, I've begun, once again to walk between the train station and work.  It's a good 15-20 minutes each direction.  Toss hockey in there once or twice a week and I'm set!!!  Now to work on planks, push-ups, pull-ups, and squats!!!

Day 1

Today, January 7, 2013 is the first day of our new way of eating.  I hesitate in calling it a diet because we're really not looking at it that way.  Instead, we've both decided that we need to make some drastic changes in the way we approach food in order to be healthy.  For me, I'm looking at this as a life-saving effort.  I never, EVER want to have cancer again and eating non-processed foods is one of the ways I think I can prevent a recurrence.  We've read literature on both sides of the paleo lifestyle so we're not going in to this uninformed.  There's too much negative info out there about gluten and dairy to ignore.  I think this is going to be life-changing for both of us and I'm anxious to feel good again!
